See your Team’s Real Potential: the Brilliance of Belbin Team Roles

Mar 24, 2025

“I’m a million different people from one day to the next…” – so sang Britpop band, The Verve, a VERY long time ago! And while a million is an exaggeration for most people, they may have had a point: we can all behave differently depending on the situation we’re in, and who we’re surrounded by – and the workplace is no exception.

Not only are you likely to be a different version of you when you’re at work, but it’s also possible that you may change based on the team you're with – and so will your teammates. So if different teams bring out different dynamics between individuals, how can you decide what the team mix should be so everyone is playing to their strengths in that instance? The answer lies in the brilliance of Belbin Team Roles, and I'm very excited to be recently accredited in it.

Here’s what it’s all about, how it can help you to maximise each of your strengths, give you insights you may have never considered, and boost your team’s performance all round…

What is Belbin Team Roles?

It’s an amazing tool that helps teams understand how each person naturally behaves in that team situation. Unlike a personality test, which focuses on fixed traits, Belbin is about behaviour in a specific team, project, or work environment. It recognises that our roles and how we fit them can evolve as we gain experience, work with different people, adapt to new challenges – and that we can feel more expert in one area of business over another.

Dr. Meredith Belbin developed this framework after years of research on team effectiveness. He identified nine distinct Team Roles, each with its own strengths and potential weaknesses. These roles are grouped into three categories:

  1. Action-Orientated Roles: Shapers, Implementers, Completer-Finishers – those who drive tasks forward and get things done.
  2. People-Orientated Roles: Coordinators, Teamworkers, Resource Investigators – those who bring people together, foster collaboration, and seek new opportunities.
  3. Thought-Orientated Roles: Plants, Monitor Evaluators, Specialists – those who bring creativity, critical thinking, and deep expertise.

Why Does This Matter for Businesses?

Many challenges in the workplace – professional and personal – stem from teams that have been created with the wrong mix of strengths, abilities and traits, which can lead to poor communication, and underused skills. This risks inefficiency, conflict, lower morale, and people just disengaging.

Using Belbin Team Roles can give you fascinating insights into the causes of these issues, meaning your team will thrive instead:

·       Stronger Team Collaboration: each person’s preferred role is clear, meaning that teams can work more effectively together, reducing misunderstandings and improving synergy.

·       Better Task Allocation – with a clear understanding of strengths and weaknesses, managers can assign tasks that align with employees’ natural abilities, leading to higher engagement and productivity.

·       Psychological Safety – Teams that understand and appreciate each other’s strengths create an environment where people feel safe to contribute, take risks, and challenge ideas, ultimately meaning there’s more innovation and better performance.

·       From ‘I’ to ‘We’ – Belbin helps shift team culture from individual contributions to collective success, improving morale and engagement.

·       Developing a Growth Mindset – By increasing self-awareness, individuals can adapt, develop new skills, and learn to work more effectively with different team members.

How Can You Use Belbin Team Roles in Your Business?

Whether you’re leading a small team or managing a large department, it can help you:

  • Identify strengths and weaknesses within your team;
  • Improve team dynamics and collaboration;
  • Resolve conflicts more easily by increasing shared understanding between colleagues;
  • Create a roadmap for team development to improve your performance generally.

When people fill the role that’s right for them, they can play to their strengths, enjoy their work more, contribute meaningfully, and are more likely to stay engaged and committed to that team’s success. Businesses that use Belbin really can expect a happier, more productive, and cohesive workforce – and I’ve seen it in action for myself.
